- Beware... Bovine is not for the faint of heart. But I believe every city
SHOULD have a trashy punk bar. And after traveling to NYC, Pittsburgh,
Philadelphia, Chicago, LA and San Diego... I have to say, Toronto's Bovine
Sex Club is still the best.
Leave your fancy expectations at home. If you want to "mosh", hear cheesy
mainstream bands like Linkin Park - go to a live Edge Presentations show.
If you want cheap drinks, leather-wearing cabage patch kids in cages, an
individualistic crowd and surly punk rock, then you've come to the right
place!
I've seen some awesome live bands here like the Cancerbats (a staple of
the TO punk scene), The Video Dead and Ottawa's No Other Way. DJ Shannon
(who's also noted for her Dance Cave appearances) plays a solid rock mix
on Tuesday nights with everything from Prodigy and NIN to The Ramones and
Social D.
The back smoker's lounge is a nice retreat from the winter weather and a
good time to gaze up at all the museum relics and garbage-pile-like
displays plastered on the walls and ceiling. It sort of takes your
cluttered Hard Rock Cafe decor and mangles it, mocks it, soils it. Every
time you visit, you'll notice something different on the walls whether
it's an animal bone, an angry-looking Barbie doll or a dolphin statue.
This is a place for the postmodernist, the rebel, the older poor punk, the
writer, the tattoo artist, the rocker.

- So some friends and I were hanging out not knowing what to do with the evening when somebody suggested to go clubbing. Since we all liked rock, Bovine Sex Club was suggested cause I heard they play metal & hard rock. This place is located on Bathurst & Queen, the "rock club district" along with Velvet, Kathedral, Funhaus (formely Zen), & NASA -> not as nice looking as the enterntainment district but I wasn't gonna be judgmental.
So we get there at around 10:15-10:30 PM, see no line up (lucky cause it was freezing) and enter the place -> no cover. We were expecting to see something similar to the Phoenix Saturday night crowd -> rockers, metalheads, & people that just wanna get in a moshpit. But to my surprise, upon entering we were surrounded by 1001 hardcore goths. I kind of felt out of place cause I was one of the few people who didn't have a Halloween custome :( .
The music wasn't what I expected either. I expected to hear stuff like Linkin Park -> again stuff they play @ the Phoenix but what I mostly heard was depressing Doom/Gothic Metal which kind of explains the crowd. Hardly anybody was dancing to it, people were just standing around moving from one foot to another :o . I could have sworn that half the club must have been on some sort of anti depressant drug :eek . At one point, I heard a bit of energtic Thrash Metal but still the crowd's energy didn't change :gaga so my buddies & I started a moshpit. While we were at it, I bumped into a goth guy beside me and he seemed offended and said in high pitched voice "Why'd you push me?" and I just told him to relax that it was just a moshpit so he looked at me as if he saw a ghost and then walked away. It was actually quite funny cause everybody looked like a zombie. :lol :lol :lol
On the plus side, drinks were on the cheaper side. The bar was never too busy so service wasn't too bad either.
All in all, I just wasn't into this club even though I like to keep an open mind when trying new things. I chatted with a few ladies but they seemed to be a bit too far out for me as did everybody else. I left early cause the goth scene just isn't my thing.
Overrall Rating: 4/10. Would I come back? Maybe on Halloween but other than that it's a no-no.
